The Forge: Cash farming guide

Looking to make money fast in The Forge? While becoming one of the fat cats sitting on a mountain of gold coins may not seem like the most pressing of concerns while you're wandering Stonewake's Cross in The Forge, the moment you hit the Forgotten Kingdom, you'll realise money talks.

You'll have to endure the Goblin King picking you up and shaking you down for spare change constantly, and to mine the most lucrative rocks, you'll need to empty your wallet to buy pickaxes capable of even making a dent in them. Never fear though, your get-quick-rich instructor is here. I've spent enough time having my pennies pinched by the Goblin King to figure out some great ways to conjure coinage, and if you want to be let in on my secrets, here are all the methods I used to quickly farm cash in The Forge:

In this guide:

Fasted method: Sell Heavy Armour

Let's start with what I'd say is hands-down the quickest and most reliable strategy: forging as much heavy armour as possible. I became the master at this while greasing the palms of the Goblin King. While using the Forge, you'll realise that the percentage chance of making certain types of armour is entirely dictated by how much ore you chuck into it. If you were to, say, throw 40 quartz into the Forge, you'd have a 75% of making a Quartz Dark Knight Chestplate. Even if you defied the odds, you'd wind up with Heavy Leggings or a Heavy Helmet instead.

And all three of those items, unless you've royally messed up the forging process, will always sell for more than 40 quartz individually. Handing 40 quartz to the ore salesman will probably net you something in the 900 coins range. A Dark Knight Chestplate, on the other hand, is in the 2,200 coins range. And this is unanimous for all the ores you'll find. Cobalt is a great one to spam into the Forge, because its incredibly common and makes relatively high-value loot.

To capitalise on that, I'd head into the mines and chip away at Basalt Cores and Basalt Veins until my stash was full. To do that quickly, find a good Basalt Core or Vein spawn spot. The one I always go to is in the lower caverns of the Ashen Passage. From here, you can get to hacking or, for an extra speedy tip, try and find two rocks right next to each other. If you stand between them and aim the pickaxe in the centre, you can often hit both of the rocks' hitboxes and mine them simultaneously.

When your stash is full, go to the Forge and make as many heavy armour pieces as you possibly can out of any ores you managed to scrounge up. When your equipment limit is maxed or you've run out of ores to throw at the Forge, sell everything you made. Doing this constantly nets you way more cash than selling ores individually, and if you're doing quests like the Goblin King's endless scavenger hunt, chances are you'll be stuck down the mines regardless, so why not profit from it?

Complete quests

Another very easy way to get cash is to complete quests. Some of these missions will inundate you with money, and you'll probably complete half of them simply by playing the game. While some NPCs will give you more targeted quests, like Tomo, others will simply task you with killing enemies or finding ore. You're probably doing both of those things anyway, but they won't count if the quest isn't active. So make sure you talk to every NPC you find and check if they have quests.

Captain Rowan, the main quest giver in Forgotten Kingdom, has several quests related to killing enemies. You can find him opposite the main entrance to Forgotten Kingdom's cave. Meanwhile, Amber, who's near the entrance of the Ashen Path, will also hand out a quest that just relies on smashing apart skeletons in the Volcanic Depths, which, after some hefty upgrades, you'll likely be doing anyway. Sensei Moro and Barakkulf, on the other hand, will give you quests centred on mining, and you can find both of them at the Forgotten Kingdom Forge. All four NPCs offer quests that are great for making passive gains while you go about your business.

Farm enemies

It'll hardly generate as much gold as breaking rocks, turning them into armour and selling your curated pieces, but you can farm infinite gold by killing enemies. Every enemy you kill will add wealth to your bank account, and while weaker foes aren't worth the hassle, stronger ones are absolutely worth hacking apart for spare change.

If you ask me, this method is only worth the time if you have the gear to brave the Volcanic Depths area. The Blazing Slimes and Reaper enemies can net you over 100 coins a pop, and seeing as they respawn a lot, you can make a tonne of cash by farming them.

Claim Index prizes

A feature that took me way too long to notice is that the in-game index is actually a money-making machine. If you head into your inventory and click the "Index" tab, you'll find lists for every new weapon, enemy and ore you've discovered. If you've only just discovered a listing in these sections, there will be a button over it labelled "claim." If you click it, you'll get an influx of experience and cash.

Of course, that money isn't infinite, but if you completely missed the feature, like me, that's a huge wad of cash you're unknowingly sitting on. Make sure to claim it and reap the rewards from your discoveries.

Sell old pickaxes

This is more of a reminder than anything, but if you're still lugging around an old pickaxe, sell that sucker. Pickaxes can never be sold for the same amount they were purchased for, but if you're rocking a real good one, they'll still net you a good percentage of what you paid. And considering some of them set you back $100,000 or more, that's not money to skimp on.

Every time you upgrade your trusty tool, make sure to sell your former pickaxe back so you can get a return on investment.

Now you know every scheme to load your pockets, get out there and become the mining tycoon you were born to be.
